The cake I made. |
I baked my own wedding cake. It was small, but I only wanted it to be for the official cake cutting. We ordered sheet cakes from a local bakery to be served to the guests.
Wilton has a wonderful website. I found instructions there for making your own wedding cake. It was really helpful. I suggest making a "practice" cake so that you can really get a feel for it. Look for good quality wedding cake pans and supplies in the cake section of a craft store such as Michael's or Joann etc.
I used pre-made floral cake decorations from Cakes by Sam. I baked the cake and covered it with fondant two days before the wedding. I assembled it on the morning of the wedding, but you could do it the night before.
Use a nice cake stand, it really adds to the final presentation. A variety of cake stands are readily available on the internet. Prices vary, sometimes for the same stand, so research several vendors before purchasing.
Good luck!
