“Dishes in the Dark”

Life begins at 40, or so they say. That’s what Agnes Ballard tells herself each night, as she does her dishes in the dark. Married to a lout of a man, her college sweetheart, a tax accountant named Felix Hartley, with four children, Agnes goes through her day wondering where she could have gone wrong, how she could have made things better. She remembers wanting to be a doctor, but as she gazes in the sink basins, seeing only dishes, bubbles, and the reflection of the moon, Agnes throws off her apron and her inhibitions, and sets out on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that will change who she is, and who she isn’t, forever.
